The Australian government is being urged to fund a missing person's unit in Timor-Leste to help the country deal with disappearances which took place during Indonesia's illegal and brutal occupation. The cost of setting up such unit is said to be $400,000 USD. This call is to be welcomed of course but it's not addressing the real problem when it comes to searching for Timor's missing persons. The problem is with the lack of political will among Timor's politicians to look into this matter more seriously. After all, $400,000 USD is peanuts. My own father has been missing since 1979 after he was arrested (you can read about it here) and I am saddened with the way Timor-Leste is dealing with this issue (if there is any interest at all), specially when it only costs $400,000 USD to set up a proper institution to handle it.
